When our story begins, Oskar is a twelve-year-old Swedish boy whose parents are divorced. He adores his father and his happiest moments occur when he is visiting his father. His father is glad to give Oskar a good time during his visits, but he is unwilling to undertake the responsibility of raising a child; so Oskar must live in a drab apartment in Blackeberg, a suburb of Stockholm, with his over-protective mother, who is raising him to be just like her - that is, effeminate. As a result, he is the favourite target of three of his classmates: Conny and his two lackeys, Martin and Andreas. They bully him mercilessly, calling him a pig and insisting that he squeal like one, and his other classmates shun him for fear of being bullied themselves. Too timid to stand up to his tormentors, Oskar retreats into a world of fantasy.
