Your doubts about Tom Riddle's intentions overcomes your admiration for his brilliance; so, despite the protests of some of the other staff members about the difficulty of finding someone to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts this close to the beginning of the school year, you refuse to give him the job. He casts a curse on the job, declaring that nobody will ever again last more than a year in it, and then storms out of your office.

Many years pass, during which time Lord Voldemort, as Tom Riddle now calls himself, continues to gather followers until he is able to begin terrorizing the wizarding world. You hastily create an organization called the Order of the Phoenix, dedicated to stopping him.

One day a witch by the name of Sybill Trelawney, great great-granddaughter of the Seer Cassandra Trelawney, applies to become a Professor of Divination at Hogwarts. You have never put much trust in Divination, but you agree to meet her at the Hog's Head, a sleazy bar run by your brother Aberforth. While you are interviewing her, she suddenly goes into a trance and, in a voice most unlike her normal one, prophesizes that at the end of July a boy who will have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort will be born to parents who have thrice defied him. Half way through her recitation, your brother notices a Death Eater, Severus Snape, eavesdropping and expels him from the bar. Sybill Trelawney finishes giving her prophecy, then awakens from her trance and once again asks you to hire her, and, without much enthusiasm, you agree.

At least part of her prophecy comes true. During the last two days in July, two boys are born to parents who have thrice defied Lord Voldemort: Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom. Since Neville's parents are both top-notch Aurors, you feel that they will be able to protect him. Harry's parents, on the other hand, are not as well versed at fighting as the Longbottoms. His father James is better suited to playing Quidditch than fighting, and his mother Lily is an excellent potions maker but not exactly a proficient dueler. You decide that they should go into hiding in their home in Godric's Hollow, and that their location should be guarded by a Secret Keeper. You will cast the spell that confers the power of Secret Keeper upon the person they choose for the job
